Fola was founded in 1949 by a group of Ivorian students who were studying in France. The club's name is a reference to the Fon people of Benin, who are known for their strength and resilience.
Fola quickly became one of the top clubs in Ivory Coast, winning its first Ligue 1 title in 1963. The club went on to win five more Ligue 1 titles in the 1970s and 1980s.
