The Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) is the second-highest level of college football in the United States, below the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). There are 128 FCS teams in the 2023 season, divided into 13 conferences.
History
The FCS was created in 1978 as Division I-AA. The name was changed to FCS in 2006. The FCS has produced some of the most successful college football programs in the country, including North Dakota State, Montana, and James Madison.
