Druk Naresuan United was founded in 2016 by a group of Bhutanese football enthusiasts. The club's name is a reference to King Naresuan the Great, a 16th-century Thai king who is considered a national hero in Bhutan.
Druk Naresuan United made their debut in the Bhutan Premier League in the 2016 season. They finished the season in fourth place.
The club won their first Bhutan Premier League title in the 2020 season. They also won the Bhutanese Independence Cup in 2021.
