The club was founded in 2005 by Manchester United supporters opposed to American businessman Malcolm Glazer's takeover of the club. The club's name is a reference to the phrase "compete united", which was used by the supporters' group that led the campaign against Glazer's takeover.
Compete United have won promotion three times since their formation, reaching the Northern Premier League Premier Division in 2015. The club finished in 10th place in their first season in the Premier Division, and they are currently in 13th place.
