Introduction
Celtic Boys Club was a youth football club in Glasgow, Scotland. It was founded in 1966 and was affiliated with Celtic Football Club. The club helped more than 50 players towards professional careers, some at Celtic F.C.
The club was renamed St Patrick's Sports Academy in August 2018 at a time when four former affiliated individuals were awaiting trial for historic sexual abuse offences committed from the 1960s to the 1990s.
History
Celtic Boys Club was founded in 1966 by a group of volunteers who were given permission from Robert Kelly, the chairman of Celtic Football Club, to use the Celtic name. The club was initially based in a hall in Maryhill, Glasgow.
The club quickly became successful, winning numerous trophies at youth level. In the 1970s and 1980s, Celtic Boys Club produced a number of players who went on to play professional football, including Kenny Dalglish, Paul McStay, and Andy Roxburgh.
Sexual abuse allegations
In 2017, a number of former players of Celtic Boys Club came forward to allege that they had been sexually abused by coaches at the club. The allegations led to a police investigation and the resignation of the club's chairman.
In August 2018, four former affiliated individuals were charged with historic sexual abuse offences committed from the 1960s to the 1990s. The club was renamed St Patrick's Sports Academy at this time.
