Although they compete in a number of different sports, Botafogo is mostly known for its association football team. It plays in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the top tier of the Brazilian football league system, and in the state of Rio de Janeiro's premier state league.
In 2000, Botafogo finished 12th in a vote by subscribers of FIFA Magazine for the FIFA Club of the Century. They have won the Brazilian championship two times, in 1968 and 1995.
History
Botafogo was founded on September 1894 by a group of rowing enthusiasts. The football team was formed in 1904 and played its first match against the Fluminense Football Club.
Botafogo won its first Brazilian championship in 1968, defeating Santos in the final. The club won its second Brazilian championship in 1995, defeating Palmeiras in the final.
Botafogo has also won the Copa do Brasil twice, in 1992 and 2007. The club has also won the Torneio Rio-São Paulo three times, in 1962, 1964, and 1966.
