Atlético Madrid, S.A.D. is a Spanish professional football club based in Madrid that plays in La Liga. The club play their home games at the Metropolitano, which has a capacity of 68,456.
History
Atlético Madrid was founded on 26 April 1903 as Athletic Club Sucursal de Madrid by three Basque students living in Madrid. These founders saw the new club as a youth branch of their childhood team, Athletic Bilbao who they had just seen win the 1903 Copa del Rey Final in the city. In 1904, they were joined by dissident members of Real Madrid. The side began playing in blue and white halved shirts, the then colours of Athletic Bilbao, but by 1911, both the Bilbao and Madrid teams were playing in their current colours of red and white stripes.
Atlético Madrid won their first La Liga title in 1940, and their first Copa del Rey title in 1951. They have since won a total of 11 La Liga titles, 10 Copa del Rey titles, 2 UEFA Europa League titles, 1 UEFA Super Cup title, and 1 UEFA Intertoto Cup title.
Atlético Madrid's most famous player is Diego Maradona, who played for the club from 1992 to 1993. Other notable players who have played for Atlético Madrid include Luis Aragonés, Fernando Torres, Antoine Griezmann, and Jan Oblak.
