More about the team
Local young people from the Aston and Lozells areas of Birmingham, formed Aston Rangers Football Club in 1975. At the time the Bangladeshi community was very small, it was around the time that families just started to arrive. The aim of the team was to discourage young people from getting involved in crime and provide a leisure activity. During the late seventies and early eighties the Bangladeshi community grew immensely with more and more people coming over. As a result there was more young people which meant more footballers. Aston Rangers recognised how important it was to provide a service for these young people hence they formed two other teams; an under 14’s team and an under 18’s team, players that were older than 18 moved into the senior team. In the mid to late 80’s having fulfilled their potential most of the squad remained in tact but were now playing for the senior team. The team won tournament after tournament all over England, fellow Bengali teams feared them. During the early eighties the team was so successful they recruited players from Milton Keynes, Rhyl, Oldham and other parts of the Midlands. This team also completed a successful tour of Bangladesh for 4 weeks in 1996, the first Bengali football team to do so from Birmingham. Aston Rangers were also the first team to win the Shapla Cup Final at Villa Park, home of Aston Villa FC in the 1999/2000 season. Aston Rangers were also one of the pioneers of organising Bengali Football Tournaments in Birmingham. Although a lot of players have retired from football due to other commitments they all have Aston Rangers in their hearts and still keep in touch. Although the team is under new management and many new players have arrived at the club a few players from the hey day of the 90’s are still around. The new players have taken over from where the older players left off winning two 6-a-side tournaments and finishing third in another. This current team is blessed with talented players in every position on the pitch, if they keep their motivation and commitment they can go on and break all club records.
