Associação Portuguesa de Desportos, commonly referred to as Portuguesa, is a Brazilian professional football club based in the district of Pari, São Paulo, that competes in the Campeonato Paulista, the top tier of the São Paulo state football league. It is part of a sports club, founded on 14 August 1920, by the Portuguese population of the city.
History
- The club was founded on 14 August 1920, by the merger of five Portuguese clubs in São Paulo: Lusíadas Futebol Club, Portugal Marinhense, Associação Cinco de Outubro, Associação Atlética Marquês de Pombal and Esporte Club Lusitano.
- Portuguesa won the Campeonato Paulista three times, in 1935, 1936 and 1973. They also finished as runners-up four times and third place thirteen times.
- Portuguesa played in the Série A, the top tier of Brazilian football, for 21 seasons. Their best finish was third place in 1973.
- Portuguesa was relegated from the Série A in 1997 and has not returned to the top flight since.
