APOEL Football Club is a professional football club based in Nicosia, Cyprus. They are one of the founding members of the Cyprus Football Association. APOEL are the most successful football team in Cyprus with an overall tally of 28 national championships, 21 cups, and 13 super cups.

History

APOEL was founded in 1926 by a group of Greek Cypriot students. The club's name is an acronym for ????t???? ??d?sfa?????? ?µ???? ??????? ?e???s?a? (Athlitikos Podosferikos Omilos Ellinon Lefkosias), which means "Athletic Football Club of Greeks of Nicosia".

APOEL's first major trophy was the Cypriot Cup, which they won in 1937. The club won their first league title in 1939. APOEL has won the league title a total of 28 times, more than any other team in Cyprus.

APOEL's greatest moment in European competition occurred in the 2011–12 season, when they advanced out of the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. They finished top of their group, which included FC Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Zenit St. Petersburg. APOEL were eventually knocked out in the round of 16 by Real Madrid.
