In a thrilling end to end friendly encounter at Girton's home ground, The Hunters faced off against Girton, ultimately succumbing to a 5-3 defeat.
Girton are top of the Cambs league and are the best team on paper in the area.
The match kicked off at 10:00 am and showcased a competitive spirit from both sides, with plenty of action throughout the 60 minutes of play.
Town set up in our 3-4-1 formation, which saw Noah White in goal, flanked by Samuel Davids, Henry Smith, and Reuben Zimmermann.
The midfield was packed with Jacob Wyatt on the right, Jack Edwards and Magnus Kristensen centrally, and Roman Lawrence Alexander on the left.
George Smith led the line as the sole striker, tasked with converting chances into goals.
The formation aimed to provide a solid defensive base while allowing for fluid attacking transitions.
The substitutes for Town included Sam Godfrey, Josh Cooke, Stefan Maresi, and Will Stewart, who were poised to make an impact as the match progressed.
The opening exchanges were lively, and it was Town who struck first.
In the 7th minute, Roman Lawrence Alexander found the back of the net with a well-placed left-footed shot from inside the box, assisted by George Smith's precise short pass.
This early goal set the tone for an exciting contest with the game flowing from end to end and our boys, some of who are 2 years younger making the opposition look bang average.
Then Henry Smith popped up in the box to finish off a smart dummy from Magnus making it 2-0 to Town.
However, Girton Colts responded quickly making it 2-1.
Then just three minutes later, the Colts drew level from the penalty spot, converting after a foul in the box which was very questionable.
In a tactical move, Huntingdon made two substitutions bringing on Sam Godfrey for Magnus Kristensen and Josh Cooke for Reuben Zimmermann.
The changes aimed to inject fresh energy into the midfield and defence as they sought to regain control of the match.
The Colts then took the lead after the ball bobbled around in the box and it was as poked home.
The first half concluded with Girton leading 3-2, but Huntingdon came out with renewed determination after the break.
Just a minute into the second half, Henry Smith scored his second goal of the match in the 34th minute, tapping in from close range after another assist from George Smith, bringing the score to 3-3 .
However, Girton regained their advantage, scoring another penalty in the 43rd minute, followed by a third goal just a few minutes later, extending their lead to 5-3.
But Town were relentless with their attacking and we couldn’t have asked for more looking for the comeback.
The boys put in a fantastic performance and effort today.
And despite the scoreline, they continued to push forward.
Stefan Maresi had a chance in the 46th minute but shot wide, while he was denied by the Girton goalkeeper shortly after.
Will Stewart also came close, hitting the post in the 49th minute, showing the fighting spirit.
Jack Edwards was so unfortunate not to score today as he struck the post three times throughout the match, including a near miss in the 53rd minute.
The relentless pressure was coming from Huntingdon, not the opposition.
Despite their best efforts, the final whistle blew, confirming a Girton win through luck rather than anything else.
The standout performances came from the two Smiths in Henry and George who were particularly impressive, with their contributions evident throughout the match.
The encounter was a testament to the competitive nature of the boys who never know when they’re beat and they persevered with skill and determination making Girton wondering who the hell are Huntingdon Town.
Well they certainly know now and they know they got away with one today !!!
