The League Of 2
The League Of 2 is an amateur football league in England. It is the fourth tier of the English football league system, below League One, the Championship, and the Premier League.
The League Of 2 was formed in 2004 as a rebrand of the Football League Third Division. It currently consists of 24 teams, each playing 46 matches in a season. The top two teams at the end of the season are promoted to League One, while the bottom four teams are relegated to National League.
History
The League Of 2 was formed in 2004 as a rebrand of the Football League Third Division. The decision to rebrand was made in order to bring the league in line with the other divisions of the Football League, which had all been renamed at the start of the 2004-05 season.
The first season of the League Of 2 was won by Crewe Alexandra, who finished the season 10 points clear of second-placed Brentford. The bottom four teams in the inaugural season were Chester City, Lincoln City, Rochdale, and Scarborough, who were all relegated to the National League.
The League Of 2 has been won by 10 different teams since its formation in 2004. The most successful team in the league's history is Wycombe Wanderers, who have won the title four times. Other teams to have won the League Of 2 include Crewe Alexandra, Gillingham, Plymouth Argyle, and Port Vale.
Current season
The current season of the League Of 2 is the 2023-24 season. The season started on August 5, 2023, and is scheduled to end on May 6, 2024. The current leaders of the league are Forest Green Rovers, who have won 6 of their first 7 matches.
The bottom four teams in the table at the end of the season will be relegated to the National League. The teams currently in the relegation zone are Barrow, Carlisle United, Stevenage, and Oldham Athletic.
