Introduction
The Scottish Highland Football League (commonly known as the Highland League) is a part-time professional senior football league in the north of Scotland. It sits at level 5 on the Scottish football league system, acting as a feeder to the Scottish Professional Football League.The league was founded in 1893 and is currently composed of 18 member clubs. The current champions are Brechin City, who won their first title in 2022-23.
The Highland League is known for its competitive and passionate atmosphere. The clubs often have small but dedicated followings, and the matches are often played in front of packed crowds.
History
The Scottish Highland Football League was founded in 1893 by a group of clubs from the north of Scotland. The first season of the league was played in 1893-94, and the inaugural champions were Inverness Thistle. The league has been played continuously since its inception, and has only been suspended during times of war. The Highland League has seen many changes over the years, including the introduction of promotion and relegation to the Scottish Professional Football League in 1994.The Highland League has produced some of the best players in Scottish football history, including Willie Johnston, Jim Baxter, and Paul Dickov.
