North West Counties Football League
The North West Counties Football League (NWCFL) is an English football league covering the North West of England. It is currently at Step 5 of the National League System, the ninth tier of the English football league system.
The league was founded in 1982 as the North West Counties League, and was renamed to its current name in 1998. It is currently divided into three divisions: Premier Division, Division One North, and Division One South.
History
The NWCFL was founded in 1982 as the North West Counties League, with 22 teams. The league was expanded to 24 teams in 1983, and to 26 teams in 1984.
In 1998, the league was renamed to its current name, the North West Counties Football League. The league was also expanded to 28 teams in 1998.
In 2002, the league was further expanded to 30 teams. The league was also realigned into two divisions, Premier Division and Division One.
Current Structure
The NWCFL is currently divided into three divisions:
- Premier Division (22 teams)
- Division One North (20 teams)
- Division One South (20 teams)
The Premier Division champions are promoted to the Northern Premier League Division One North, while the bottom two teams are relegated to Division One North.
The winners of Division One North and Division One South are promoted to the Premier Division, while the bottom two teams in each division are relegated to the North West Counties Football League Premier Division.
