Morpeth Sunday League
The Morpeth Sunday League was an amateur football league based in Morpeth, Northumberland. It was founded in 1969 and ceased to operate in 2023.
History
The Morpeth Sunday League was founded in 1969 by a group of local football enthusiasts. The league initially consisted of 10 teams, but it grew over the years to reach a peak of 20 teams in the 1990s.
The league was divided into two divisions, the Premier Division and the First Division. The top two teams in the Premier Division were promoted to the next season's Northern Alliance, while the bottom two teams in the First Division were relegated to the Second Division.
The Morpeth Sunday League was a popular and well-respected league in the North East of England. It provided a competitive environment for amateur footballers of all abilities.
Closure
The Morpeth Sunday League folded in 2023 due to a lack of teams. Two teams folded at the end of the 2022-23 season, and another team decided to join a different league. This left the league with only 15 teams, which was not enough to continue operating.
The closure of the Morpeth Sunday League was a sad day for local football. It was a popular league that had been providing a much-needed outlet for amateur footballers for many years.
