Introduction
League One, known as Sky Bet League One for sponsorship purposes, is the second-highest division of the English Football League and the third tier overall in the English football league system.
It is contested by 24 clubs, with each team playing each other twice, once at home and once away. The top two teams are promoted to the Championship, while the bottom four are relegated to League Two.
History
The league was formed in 1992, following the creation of the Premier League. The first season was won by Sunderland, who finished 12 points clear of runners-up Port Vale.
Since then, there have been 21 different winners of the league, with Portsmouth being the most successful team, having won the title four times.
Current season
The current season, the 2023-2024 season, is the 32nd season of League One. The season began on 30 July 2023 and is scheduled to end on 6 May 2024.
The current champions are Wigan Athletic, who won the title in the 2022-2023 season.
