Introduction
League One is the second-highest division of the English Football League (EFL). It is also known as EFL League One or simply League One.
The league was founded in 2004 as a result of the rebranding of the Football League Third Division. It currently consists of 24 clubs, each of which plays each other twice, once at home and once away.
The top two clubs at the end of the season are promoted to the EFL Championship, while the bottom four clubs are relegated to EFL League Two.
History
The Football League Third Division was founded in 1920 as the third tier of the English football league system. It was renamed League One in 2004 as part of a rebranding of the Football League.
The league has been won by a total of 23 clubs, with Sunderland being the most successful team, having won the title seven times.
The current champions are Wigan Athletic, who won the title in the 2022-23 season.

The 2023-24 season of League One is currently underway. The season started on July 29, 2023, and is scheduled to end on May 6, 2024.
